How To Build The Perfect Weekend Skincare Routine

I don’t know about you but I’m a sucker for long 10 step skincare routines and it’s the ME time I crave for, with my hectic full time marketing role I cannot stress enough on how much I look forward to weekends.

Weekends are when our skin finally gets a break from long days, stress, and constant exposure. It’s the perfect time to slow down, listen to your skin, and give it a little extra attention.

How to build a Weekend Skincare Routine?

Take a pause and think about how you decided on what serum, what moisturiser or what sunscreen should you use for your daily skincare routine? It was all decided based on your skin concern or skin type, probably,  you discovered you had dry and dehydrated skin and you chose products that would work well with that or perhaps your dermatologist or your favorite skinfluencer guided you on what works best for your specific skin type or concern.

Just the way you have a set routine based on skin type and skin concern for the weekdays, your weekend skincare is no different. The key is to start with identifying your target concern and follow steps that would be intentional and effective. Which is why after a lot of research and understanding of different skincare tools and products I have developed 9 weekend skincare routines that target specific skin concerns. Here’s a quick sneak peek of the 9 skin concerns that we are going to be talking about. I’m going to keep it straightforward and get into each routine explaining when you should opt for it and the steps to the same.

So let’s skin sesh….

I classify weekend skincare routine into falling categories:

  1.  Exfoliating Routine (Cleanup)
  2. Blackhead/Whitehead Removal

  3. Brightening/Detan Routine

  4. Soothing/Hydrating Routine

  5. Depuffing/Cooling Routine

  6. Skin Barrier Repair Routine

  7. Oil Control Routine

  8. Acne Care Routine

  9. Skin tightening Routine

Exfoliating Routine (Cleanup)

When your skin feels dull, patchy and congested, that’s when you can follow this exfoliation routine, it’s a great way to clean up and smooth out texture.

  • Double Cleansing – At night, start with  a cleansing balm to break down oil and impurities followed by a gel cleanser. In the daytime you could opt for a single cleanse or do both if needed.
  • Facial Steamer – take a hot steam for 5-7 mins to soften dead skin and open up your pores, prepping your skin for the next step.
  • Clay Mask – Apply a clay mask and leave it on for 5-7 mins, make sure it is not completely dried up before wash, it should ideally be 75% dried up before you wash it.
  • Facial Razor – If you’re someone who uses a facial razor to remove peach fuzz, you should follow this right after this step, it’s completely an optional step.
  • Sheet Mask – End the routine with a hydrating sheet mask to restore hydration after exfoliation

Blackhead/Whitehead Removal

A very common form of acne that is not only faced by oily skin type but mostly all. At-home blackhead extractions are a common ritual, while it’s completely fine to do that, the choice of tools and process for blackhead extraction is important. In this article we’ll talk about both, starting with the gentle version and then giving a quick insight on the tools.

  • Cleanser – start with a gentle gel based cleanser.
  • BHA Liquid – you can apply the BHA liquid on the blackhead/whitehead prone area or you could target the entire face and spread the product across evenly.
  • Clay Mask – After 15 mins of applying the BHA liquid, apply a clay mask over it and wash it off in 10 mins before it fully dries up.
  • Cleansing Oil/ Balm – wait 10 mins after washing off the clay mask, then massage your face with a cleansing balm or cleansing oil to loosen clogged pores.
  • Sheet Mask – rinse off the cleansing balm and apply a hydrating sheet mask to restore moisture.
  • Pore tightening toner – after sheet mask, you can continue with your usual skincare routine, keeping it extremely hydrated. Use a pore tightening toner as an addition to the routine.
  • Lightweight moisturiser – avoid avoid avoid using a thick moisturiser, use a light weight, probably a gel based moisturiser.

    Other products
  • Steaming – In case you opt for using a blackhead/whitehead extraction tool, you can  replace the BHA Liquid step with taking a hot facial steam for 5 mins and then go in with the blackhead extractor tool.
  • Blackhead extractor tool – There are 2 types of tool that you can use – electric vacuum and skin spatula. Although the tools come with instruction manuals, it’s best to not opt for this and reach out to a professional, if you don’t know how to use these tools correctly it can lead to scarring. You can continue the above routine from the clay mask step after you’re done with extraction.

Brightening/ De-Tan Routine

Whether you’re looking to reduce your face tan or achieving a radiant glow, the below steps could make up for a great weekly skincare routine

  • Ice globe – start by cooling down your face with ice globes, this feels good when your skin is tanned or inflamed, it’s the best way to prep your skin for the routine ahead.
  • Brightening face pack/ De-Tan pack – Your next step should be going in with a detan pack such as multani mitti or you could opt for a brightening pack containing vit c, rice extract, kojic acid or niacinamide.
  • Sheet Mask – A rice extract sheet mask could be a great addition after the face pack for brightening your skin.
  • Niacinamide sleeping mask – In case your daily skincare routine is focused on brightening, suggest you continue with that routine after this and if not, just opt for a niacinamide overnight sleeping mask
  • Guasha – End the routine with a gua sha massage focusing on blood circulation, which helps in getting an instant glow on the face

Soothing/Hydrating Routine

In case you have extremely dehydrated or dry skin or if  you’re in a location that’s drying up your skin, you can follow this routine to bring back that moisture and make your skin feel hydrated

    • Cleanser – start with a cream based cleanser that would help clean your face of impurities while making it feel nourished.
    • Facial Steamer – take a facial steam for 5 mins before you go in with a mask to prep your skin and open up your pores for better absorption of the product.
    • Hydrating Mask – use a hydrating mask with ingredients like oat, honey, ceramides or panthenol and wash off once it’s 50-60% dried up.
    • Sheet Mask – choose a sheet mask infused with ingredients like cica, aloe vera or collagen for extra hydration.
    • Ice globes – in case you’re skipping the sheet mask, use ice globes to cool and calm down the irritation on your skin.
    • Toner/ mist – follow up with a hydrating toner or mist to lock in moisture while feeling refreshed.
    • Overnight sleeping mask – if you’re following this routine at night, apply an overnight sleeping mask or a thick moisturiser with barrier repairing ingredients to seal it all in.

Depuffing/Cooling Routine

If you’re facing redness or inflammation on your skin, or you’re just in need for a refreshing skincare session, not targeting a specific concern, this routine could be it.

  • Ice globes – start with gently massaging your face for 1-2 minutes with chilled ice globes.
  • Gentle Cleanser – use a gentle cleanser, something with centella, oat or aloe as an ingredient that would not strip your skin.
  • Serum, Mist or Facial Oil – massage your face with a face oil to make it easy for a gua sha to glide on. In case a face oil feels too heavy, opt for a serum or a mist.
  • Gua Sha – gliding a gua sha around your face is easy but I suggest you watch tutorials on how to do it the right way! It’s important to focus on each area and continue with 7-8 strokes along the jawline, cheekbones, forehead and under the eyes.
  • Jade roller – while it’s not necessary to use a jade roller after a gua sha but you can do both or do either. Focus on rolling the jade roller in upward and outward motion, you can use a chilled jade roller also for a cooling effect
  • Eye patches – eye patches are a great way to depuff and cool down the eye area, put on some eye patches and get going with your day.

Skin Barrier Repair Routine

If you’re currently using actives or retinol in your daily skincare routine but still prefer to do some extra skincare on a weekend – this routine is for you. This routine can also be opted for if your skin has been extremely irritated and you just want to focus on relaxing it.

  • Cleanser – you know the drill, start with a cleanser and of course use a gentle one since we are focusing on skin barrier repair.
  • Toner – use a toner with calming ingredients like centella asiatica or any other ingredient that could help you calm down your skin.
  • Orange LED Light – go in with a led mask, the orange light is the best option in this case since it helps in cell regeneration, boosting collagen production (which can help in faster skin recovery) and reduces redness.
  • Sheet Mask –  Choose a Centella/Cica sheet mask to nourish and calm down on irritation and redness.
  • Serum – Go in with a hyaluronic acid or niacinamide serum to replenish moisture.
  • Thick moisturiser – finish with a thick ceramide based moisturiser. If you’re following this routine at night, opt for a sleeping mask instead.

Oil Control Routine

If your skin tends to get oily and congested, this routine could help you control that shine while keeping it hydrated.

  • Double Cleansing – start with an oil based cleanser to get rid of the excess sebum, you can massage the cleanser on your face and follow it up with your regular cleanser.
  • BHA Liquid – Apply BHA liquid or salicylic acid and keep it on for 5-10 mins to help exfoliate and  unclog your pores.
  • Steam – Without washing off the BHA liquid, take a hot steam for 5 mins for better absorption of the product.
  • Clay Mask – apply a clay mask and let it sit till it’s 75% dried up, before washing it off.
  • Honey & Yoghurt Mask – go in with a quick honey + yoghurt pack to restore hydration.
  • Hydration Mist/ Toner – Use a cooling mist or a toner with witch hazel or cucumber extract that would help tighten pores and refine your skin.
  • Oil free Moisturizer – end with using a non-comedogenic, gel based moisturiser with Hyaluronic or niacinamide acid.

    Other products
  • Salicylic acid sheet mask – You can replace the BHA liquid step with a salicylic acid infused sheet mask but leave this one on for 10-15 mins.

Acne Care Routine

If you have active breakouts and you wish to do some extra selfcare on a weekend, this could be the routine you follow to not irritate those stubborn breakouts

  • Salicylic acid base face wash – If you experience frequent acne, chances are you already own a salicylic acid cleanser. It’s the perfect start to this routine.
  • BHA Liquid or Salicylic Acid – Go in with a layer of salicylic acid or a BHA Liquid before to gently exfoliate.
  • Blue led light – Put on a led mask and turn to blue light mode, leave it for 10-15 mins. This would help to kill acne causing bacteria and reduce inflammation.
  • Spot treatment – apply a spot treatment on all active breakouts. You could use Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Tea Tree Oil or Pimple Patches. Wash it off before moving on to the next step.
  • Sheet Mask – since the previous steps would leave your skin feeling dry, it’s time to hydrate, go in with a calming, hydrating sheet mask.
  • Oil free Moisturizer – apply a lightweight  non-comedogenic, gel based moisturiser with Hyaluronic or Niacinamide acid.

    Other products
  • Ice globes – if you have redness on your skin, opt for icing your face for 3-4 mins before the sheet mask step.

Skin tightening Routine

If you feel your skin is lacking firmness and you notice fine lines, you can start inculcating this routine once a week, It helps in boosting collagen production while helping your skin look youthful and lifted.

  • Cleanser – start with a nice hydrating cleanser. A cleanser with peptides could be a great option.
  • Anti aging cream – apply a layer of an anti aging cream, look for an anti aging that contains retinol, argan oil, peptides or vitamin c.
  • Red Led Light – Put on a led mask and turn to red light mode, leave it for 10-15 mins. Red light is said to stimulate collagen production and help improve skin elasticity.
  • Gua Sha – apply a face oil or a mist and continue with a gua sha massage focusing on each area and continue with 7-8 strokes along the jawline, cheekbones, forehead and under the eyes.
  • Collagen sheet mask – Go in with a collagen mask, like the Biodance collagen mask, keep it on for 5-6 hours before it becomes transparent. This helps in locking moisture, and enhances elasticity.
  • Eye cream – apply a firming eye cream to smooth fine lines around the eyes.
  • Moisturiser – End with an anti-aging moisturiser or a moisturiser with ceramides and peptides.

    Other products:
  • Face Tape – face tapes have recently gained popularity for their ability to temporarily help tighten your skin and give a lift. You could replace the collagen mask step with this if you wish to see some immediate results.

Final Thoughts

Skincare isn’t about doing every single step perfectly or following what everyone else is doing. It’s really about noticing what your skin feels like and giving it what it needs that day. Your skin changes with sleep, stress, weather, and even what you eat, so it makes sense to adjust your routine instead of sticking to the same steps every week.

Weekends are the best time to slow down a bit. Some weekends your skin might want a deep clean, other times it might just need hydration or a calming mask. Listen to it, pick what feels right, and don’t worry about doing everything at once.

You don’t have to try all nine routines every week. Choose one, enjoy the process, and make it something you actually look forward to. Think of it as a small ritual for yourself, not a checklist. When you relax and take your time, your skin shows it.

So next weekend, put your phone down, play your favorite music, and spend a little time with your 10 step skincare routine.
